Irreversible.

I wish things were reversible because then I could go back in time 1 day, listen to my always-wise-but-always-questioned girlfriend and not go to Irreversible because as The Girlfriend so accurately predicted: never mind Culture Club, it’s just going to be a bunch of scary-looking dykes dancing to crappy music. And so it was. And unlike others I enjoy a good whine, so here we go.

I’d like to credit myself for at least trying to have fun. But it was made very difficult. The DJ mainly played some sort of dull house music that probably gets tons of appreciation at De Roode Piano but was way beneath Culture Club (and here I thought they had standards regarding music?). I counted three good songs and I was there for three hours. I ventured out onto the dance floor but apart from some mild swaying and a bit of exceptional butch bopping, there was no energy on that dance floor at all. And to think it cost us 9€ each to get in, I’m about to call it a disgrace but I won’t, even though I just did.

It’s disappointing party experiences like these that made us decide to throw our own party. Because no matter how you twist or turn it and regardless of the crowd: music is the life of the party. It helps to have a cool location, but that’s just a plus because Culture Club is a nice venue and so was that basement where we went to Lime… but when the music sucks, everything is lost. And well, the biggest advantage (except for the groupies) of throwing your own party is that you get to pick the DJs.

Speaking of DJs: where was DJ Tina? Bette really wanted to meet her. But she was probably shagging a guy somewhere. It all adds to the disappointment.

Time to move on and start looking forward to Dolly, with the fabulous The Lizard and the GoD of DJanes: Lady Jane. (I know, that’s a month from now. But I believe there should be some other good parties before that, I’m pretty curious about Los Ninos actually - despite the drive to Brussels it will require.)

Dirty Dykes

It appears my reluctance about going out in Brussels on a Friday night is quite infectious, resulting in another missed Catclub and an opportunity to tell Lady Jane that I adore her but don’t worship her. Oh well, I’m getting used to it.Yesterday evening I was listening to a remix of ‘What A Feeling’, you know the theme tune from Flashdance starring the young Bette Porter (yes, I do that sometimes) and it got me so fired up - mainly because I kept seeing sweaty Bette doing her jogging-in-place-thing, the absolute highlight of the movie by the way - that I really wanted to go out and just dance. And then I remembered Miss Monuments’ guestlist privileges at Café Dirty, and a little phone conference call later we were on our way to Brussels. It can be that easy. (And The Girlfriend bought me a new tie, so I had to go somewhere to show it off.)

I can only say ‘waw’ about Dirty Dancing! They have a great multi-room location (of which one with a rotating dance floor), a nice and relaxed atmosphere with a pretty mad crowd, but most of all and most importantly they have fabulous DJs. The music was fantastic and it has been quite a while since I’ve said that about a party. Those three hours of dancing instantly made up for the so far music-wise disappointing partying of this year, let’s hope Irreversible doesn’t ruin it next week.

So, thanks Ine for sharing the guestlist privilege and please remember to find out the name of that cute DJ for me. ;-)

And oh, if somehow the minimalist-dancing-Grace-Jones-look-a-like should read this: please come dance for us at Trouble, I’ll pay you.
